Introduction

Food Engineering Department was opened with the agreement in S.D.U. Agricultural Faculty Establishment by Council of Higher Education on 25th of Feb, 1994. At the beginning, in education year of 1994-1995, it started its life with 30 students in Atabey located 25 km far from city center. Our department moved to its new building in central campus being 7 km far from city center, and it still continues its education in the same place.

Food Engineering Department aims to process raw materials with most suitable method and by this way to avoid waste production, to increase the variety of healthy foods as a results of the utilization from raw materials for multi-purposes. Preservation of processed foods in terms of quantity and quality and design, development and control of suitable processes in marketing are also aimed in addition to the education and research about food control, sanitation and business.

Our department builds projects to provide solutions for problems in food industry as research activities. To adopt these studies in practices and to provide opportunity for students to make practice our department started a project to set up pilot plants in 1998. First a pilot plant for dairy production started productions of yogurt, ayran, different cheese varieties, ice-cream in 1999 with total capacity of 10 ton milk processing/day. In 2004, bakery production unit was set up with daily 500 bread production capacity.
