History

Isparta Faculty of Engineering and Architecture was established on February 21, 1976 under the name of "Isparta State Engineering and Architecture Academy" according to the Law No. 1418, and started its education and training with the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Departments in the Gülkent Secondary School Building belonging to the Ministry of National Education in the 1976-1977 academic year. The Academy was affiliated to Akdeniz University in Antalya with the Decree Law No. 41, which was enacted in addition to the Higher Education Law No. 2547 on 20 July 1982, and was named “Isparta Engineering Faculty”. It was connected to the newly established Süleyman Demirel University with the Law No. 3837 dated July 11, 1992, renamed the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture.

General Information

Civil engineering, one of the oldest and basic engineering branches of engineering science; It is the engineering branch that carries out the planning, design, construction and maintenance of various structures that emerge in line with the needs and demands in a way that will provide services to individuals and society, by standing up against the compelling effects of environmental conditions and usage conditions.
Our department, with its qualified academic staff, in the fields of education and priority research; It is a well-established department that provides systematic and effective undergraduate and graduate education in the field of Civil Engineering by creating innovative, enterprising and common sense with its stakeholders.
Mission of our department; To train civil engineers who can take part in various studies in the field at national and international level, who are sensitive to the environment, have social and ethical awareness, and will contribute to the development of society.

Fields of activity of civil engineering:

  • Infrastructures; bridge, highway, tunnel, railway, airport, port.
  • Water supply and distribution, sewer network, water transmission lines.
  • Dam and pond construction for electricity generation, irrigation and protection from natural disasters
  • Foundation design of buildings, ground structures.
  • Project design of buildings, damage analysis, repair and strengthening of buildings.
  • Inspection of structures.

Civil engineers, who do all kinds of construction and inspection work by combining materials and techniques, can find jobs in any sector of construction. Dam, road, subway, airport, bridge, buildings, railway, tunnel, water network are some of the working areas. If they want, they can do master's and doctorate after undergraduate education.

A) Our Civil Engineering Department, which continues its educational activities within the scope of the Faculty of Engineering, is located in the Western Campus of Süleyman Demirel University.

C) Civil Engineering Departments:

 

  • The Department of Structural

It is a branch of civil engineering studied in the subjects of carrier system design and structure analysis. Reinforced concrete structures, steel structures, wooden structures, masonry structures, structural analysis, dynamics of structure, and earthquake-resistant building design are its main areas of expertise. Purpose of a structural engineer or engineering; It is to dimension the structures under certain security, sufficient strength, rigidity, and ductility, in accordance with the economic and purpose. The structural engineer firstly acquires information about the purpose of the structure to be built. After determining the material to be used in the structure, it calculates the effect of the forces on the structure, creates the calculation model of the structure and sizes of the structural elements. Makes the static calculations of the structure taking into account the current regulations, specifications, and standards. Also, the structural engineer has the duty and authority to inspect the structure during the manufacture of the structure and to ensure that it is manufactured in accordance with the projects and specifications.

 

  • The Department of Geotechnics

Geotechnical engineering is a science with too wide application field. It is one of the most important branches of engineering that ensures the compatibility of the foundation systems of all reinforced concrete, wood, steel, and soil or composite structures in or on soil with the structure both under static loads and dynamic loads. Geotechnical engineering is an engineering discipline concerned with the analysis, design, and construction of foundations, underground structures, deep excavations, slopes, retaining structures, embankments, tunnels, wharf, and levee structures, earth dams and other systems that are made of or are supported by soil or rock. Geotechnical engineering includes researches that range from analytical and numerical investigation of geotechnical problems in nature to structural modeling, experimental modeling, and design and it is a sub-discipline of civil engineering. Geotechnology plays an important role in all civil engineering projects built on or in the ground and it is vital for the assessment of natural hazards such as earthquakes, liquefaction, rockfalls, and landslides. In addition, geotechnical engineering includes researches that ranges from the design of foundations and temporary excavation supports to route selection for railways and highways and from regular waste disposal to groundwater contamination.

 

  • The Department of Mechanics

Mechanics is the science that studies the conditions of balance and motion in objects under the influence of various forces. The science of mechanics is one of the oldest disciplines and was founded by Isaac Newton (1642-1727). Undergraduate Rigid Body Mechanics: Statics and Dynamics; Deformable Bodies Mechanics includes Strength I and II courses. These courses are the mechanics courses that form the foundations of engineering in almost all engineering programs. Mechanics courses in graduate programs include Elasticity theory, Plasticity theory, Plate and Shell theories, Stability and Vibration theories, Analytical Mechanics, Finite element method. Among the areas of interest of the Department of Mechanics: Continuum mechanics, solid mechanics, mechanics of structural elements, smart structures and smart materials, experimental mechanics, fracture mechanics, composite material mechanics, analytical and numerical computation methods, micro and nano mechanics, nano-composites mechanics are included. Research conducted in our department covers the most up-to-date issues of contemporary mechanics, for example; It covers linear and non-linear static and dynamic behavior of new generation sandwich structures, structural elements consisting of functionally graded materials, soil-composite structural element interaction, nano-composites, elastic and viscoelastic structural elements.

 

  • The Department of Hydraulic

The Department of Hydraulics is a sub-branch of the Civil Engineering Department that specializes in the solution of engineering problems related to water, planning, and management of surface water resources. It designs coastal-harbor structures, hydroelectric power structures and elements, storage tanks, irrigation and drainage projects, water distribution networks, and various infrastructure systems. Water, air, and soil are in constant interaction. Therefore, solutions for some natural events such as climate change, flood, and drought, solid matter transport, agglomeration are produced. The Department of Hydraulics is divided into 3 fields: Coastal and Harbor Engineering, Hydromechanics and Water Resources.

 

  • The Department of Transportation

Transportatıon is an integral and integrative component of the everyday life of individuals and societies. The tasks and tools used to perform a displacement action for a specific purpose receive the transport name as a whole. The department of transportation is an engineering branch engaged in the planning, design, and operation of various transportation systems and components that will ensure safe, adequate, convenient, and economical transport of humans and load. Considering the size of the department of interest and differences in their subjects, the obligation to divide it into sub-units emerges. In this sense, there are different working areas within the department of transportation. Some of these workspaces are;

· Highway and Airport Superstructure Design
· Geometric Planning of Highways
· High-Speed Railways
· Transportation Engineering Economy
· Airport Planning
· Design Traffic Management
With all these characteristics, the Department of Transportation is a rich and dynamic workspace. Undergraduate, master's, and doctoral educations are provided for students to be educated in the field of the Transportation Department.

 

  • The Department of Structural Material

Building Materials Division is one of the basic disciplines of civil engineering. It works on various engineering materials used for carrier purposes such as cement, steel, concrete, wood, and for non-bearing purposes such as water, heat, and sound insulation. It is the science that researches and develops the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of these materials, and gives information about the selection of materials for their proper use in the structure. Determining the strengths, weaknesses of these materials under various conditions, elimination of these weaknesses, if possible, granulometry, if used as a mixture and determining their standards and designing and producing new materials, are among the fields of study of this department.

 

D) Internship

Within the scope of the Civil Engineering Department, a compulsory internship program is applied in order to consolidate the theoretical knowledge and field experience of our students before stepping into their professional life. Our internship program, which is carried out in two stages, has been determined as at least 60 official working days in total. During the Internship-1 phase, it is done at the construction sites in the construction area (such as dam, road infrastructure / superstructure, bridge, steel structure) for at least 30 days. Internship-2 phase is held in the fields of Transportation or Water for at least 30 days.

Internship opportunities;

There is a National Internship Program (USP) by the Presidential Human Resources Office in order to ensure that our young people benefit from internship opportunities offered by public institutions and private sector organizations within the framework of equality of opportunity and in accordance with the principles of merit. In addition, TMMOB Chamber of Civil Engineers Isparta Representation helps our students who are looking for a place to do Construction, Hydraulics or Transportation internships in arranging an internship. In addition, internship fees can be paid within the budgets and decisions of the internship companies.

E) Within the scope of applied training, theoretical knowledge is supported by experimental studies in a laboratory environment. The clothing and equipment required by the profession (Helmet) are distributed to the students through the annual orientation program.

H) Dining hall, accomodation, scholarships and other facilities:

 

  • Social Facilities - Nutrition Assistance:

At the beginning of each academic year, free lunch is provided to the number of students (1000 people) who are determined by the Administrative Board of our University. Students who want to benefit from the aid apply to the Student Affairs Office of the Faculties or Vocational Schools they are in in October by submitting a copy of their identity card, criminal record, income statement. The Nutrition Commission, determined by the Rectorate, goes to the units to determine the students in need, has one-on-one interviews with the students and identifies the students who need nutritional assistance. The free lunch application is valid for one academic year and applications must be renewed each year. If the student who is entitled to receive the free lunch service does not use this right regularly, he/she will not be able to benefit from the application again during the year.

  • Accomodation
    The majority of our students enrolled in our university meet their accommodation needs in the student dormitories affiliated with YURT-KUR located on the campus.
    As Alternative Accommodation Services, when the dormitories on the campus of our University do not have sufficient capacity, the Private Dormitories in our city are determined and inspected by the Social Services Branch of the Department of Health, Culture and Sports. Private Dormitories, which get good grades from the audit, are sent to the addresses of our newly registered students together with our University's Brochure. Introductory brochures have been prepared for our students to get to know our University and our city and to solve their accommodation problems.

Promotional stands are set up to inform the students who will enroll in our university about the dormitories. In these stands, students can choose the accommodation they want to stay with their families. It is also set up in student-supported stands where the services provided at our university are explained.

  • Scholarship

Higher Education Credit and Hostels Institution Scholarship (Allocated to Universities)

According to the scholarship information received from the Credit and Hostels Institution, the quotas are distributed on the basis of units. In the last week of October and the first week of November, students apply to their units to apply for scholarships. The Scholarship Commission established in the units identifies successful students who need help and notifies the Department of Health, Culture and Sports. The names of the students who will receive a definite scholarship are sent to the General Directorate of Credit and Hostels Institution after passing through certain stages in the Department of Health, Culture and Sports Social Services Branch. Afterwards, the money of the students who won a scholarship in January is delivered to our students through Ziraat Bank.

TEV Scholarship

At the beginning of the academic year, the Turkish Education Foundation reports the number of quotas allocated to our University to the Department of Health, Culture and Sports. Our Presidency distributes the quota and sends it to the relevant units. Relevant units determine successful students by forming a commission. Identified students collect the necessary documents (TEV scholarship form, ÖSYS result document, transcript, photocopy of identity card, approved student certificate, document showing the financial situation of the family) and submit them to the department. This information is collected in a list at the Department of Health, Culture and Sports. These lists are delivered to the headquarters of the Turkish Education Foundation until the end of November. Likewise, these students start receiving their scholarships as of January.

TÜBİTAK, Ministry of Education Scholarships, DAAD Scholarships, Fulbright Scholarships, National Agency Scholarships, Jean Monnet Scholarships etc. Scholarship applications can be made according to the conditions.
