History
The Faculty of Engineering and Architecture in Isparta was established on February 21, 1976, under Law No. 1418, under the name “Isparta State Academy of Engineering and Architecture.” It began its educational activities in the 1976–1977 academic year in the Gülkent Secondary School building, owned by the Ministry of National Education, with the Departments of Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
On July 20, 1982, the academy was affiliated with Akdeniz University in Antalya through Decree Law No. 41, enacted as a supplement to the Higher Education Law No. 2547, and its name was changed to “Isparta Faculty of Engineering.” In addition to the existing Departments of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, the Department of Geological Engineering was established in the 1983–1984 academic year, the Department of Mining Engineering in 1987–1988, the Department of Geophysical Engineering in 1988–1989, and the Department of Environmental Engineering on April 1, 1992.
With the law No. 3837 dated July 11, 1992, the faculty became affiliated with the newly established Süleyman Demirel University and continued its educational activities under the name Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. With the decision of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) dated December 28, 1993, the establishment of the Departments of Architecture, Textile Engineering, and Electronics and Communication Engineering was approved, and these departments started education in the 1995–1996 academic year.
Within the framework of the same law in 1992, the Departments of Industrial Engineering, Computer Engineering, and City and Regional Planning were also established. Among these, the Department of City and Regional Planning admitted its first students in the 2005–2006 academic year, while the Departments of Industrial Engineering and Computer Engineering began education in 2006–2007. The Department of Food Engineering joined the faculty in the 2007–2008 academic year.
Currently, the Faculty of Engineering offers education in 13 departments.
Evening education programs are available in the Departments of Civil, Mechanical, Geological, Mining, Geophysical, Textile, and Electrical-Electronics Engineering. All departments of the faculty are located within the Western Campus (Çünür Campus) of the university.
With the Council of Ministers’ decision dated March 8, 2012, the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture was dissolved and reorganized as two separate faculties: the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Architecture. Consequently, the Faculty of Engineering continues its educational activities with the Departments of Computer, Environmental, Electrical-Electronics, Industrial, Food, Civil, Geophysical, Geological, Chemical, Mining, Mechanical, Automotive, and Textile Engineering.
The name of the Süleyman Demirel University Faculty of Engineering was changed to “Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences” by Presidential Decree No. 7477 dated August 4, 2023, and it continues its educational activities under this new name.
